Jamilah McGhee is embarking on a journey for which only she can lay the bricks for each step ahead of her. The rewards of McGhee's dedication to this path are that of graduating from high school WITH accolades, elevating her hobbies to legitimate skills in music and photography, and attending a four year university immediately after high school where her talents in music has earned her a seat on an their esteemed marching band. She is joining a multitude of young adults from the city that are carrying all of their experiences and aspirations off to college ready to grow them into something more. However, Jamilah McGhee's journey is unique in that she is the first in her family in generations to do any of it; including graduate from Highschool.

Most incoming college students are inundated with stories from the family about their glory days. They're taken through tales of dorm life in the 90s by this uncle, or tragedies of college break ups by that aunt. A lot of times, they have to endure, but secretly are consoled by their mother's hundredth talk about what academic resources to find in order to ensure their success or how they can always call home if the needs of adult life are outweighing their capacity to address them. So, what is college like when the people closest to you don't have those stories or tips to share; when no ground work of what's to be expected is laid before you? What happens when the way that you're going has no clear path? You make one.

At her prom-send of, Jamilah holds her precious baby brother, and a new legacy that he will grow to experience the impact of.

It was her own entrepreneurial giftings and her belief in God that made the decision. And it was the community around her that made it possible. Those same generations that may not have had the same experiences that she will have, are made of the same women and men who will never allow her to forget that she deserves to be celebrated. Her family acts as one echo that silently reverberates throughout the whole city of Chicago, saying "I got your back." A reassurance that has started revolutions, ended wars and will one day heal this city...In perpetuity.
